PAN Proposes Election Bill as Government Initiative: To Avoid Party Political Struggles
Deputy Chairman of PAN Saleh Daulay stated that the current discussions on the revision of the Election Law (RUU Pemilu) are still limited to internal deliberations within each political party. Saleh proposed that the RUU Pemilu should become a government initiative proposal.
“As far as I recall, the RUU Pemilu has always been a government initiative. If it is to be discussed, I propose that the current one be taken up by the government. It just needs to be discussed again in Baleg so that the deliberation can start soon,” Saleh told reporters on Thursday (23/4/2026).
“If based on a government initiative, the clashes of ideas and party agendas can be avoided at the beginning of the discussion. Even if there are differences, they will be accumulated during the DIM discussion,” Saleh said.
Saleh stated that there has been no discussion on the RUU Pemilu yet. According to him, there are many themes and topics being discussed within each political party at present.
“The RUU Pemilu is very important. Each party has its own interests. From the stages of forming the organisers, to the counting and determination of results. It’s not easy to discuss,” he said.
Saleh acknowledged that there have been informal cross-party discussions. However, he said, those discussions are still around compiling and mapping crucial issues that could potentially arise.
This Chairman of Commission VII of the DPR said that every political party knows that the RUU Pemilu is the main foundation for implementing democracy in Indonesia. He said the election bill must accommodate the interests of political parties, the government, and society.
“Everyone must be involved. Religious figures, community leaders, youth figures, mass organisations, universities, and all related elements. This is what is meant by meaningful participation. No one should be left out or abandoned,” he explained.
Meanwhile, PAN Secretary-General Eko Hendro Purnomo, or Eko Patrio, admitted that he agrees if the discussion of the RUU Pemilu is accelerated. According to him, this is to allow preparation time for the election.
“PAN agrees to immediately discuss the revision of the Election Law. The aim is to have preparation time for deepening the substance of the law to ensure quality,” he said.
This Deputy Chairman of Commission VI of the DPR also emphasised that there is no secret discussion of the RUU Pemilu. He stressed that the RUU Pemilu will be discussed openly.
“All Indonesians can follow the discussions in the Pansus meetings. The public can provide input, ideas, and suggestions openly,” he said.
“The meetings are not held in dark rooms, but in bright rooms, as bright as the shining sun,” he added.
