As part of a campaign to promote healthy and environmentally-friendly living, PAM JAYA, Jakarta’s state-owned water company, has partnered with basketball club Pelita Jaya Jakarta to distribute tumblers to residents. This initiative aims to encourage the habit of carrying reusable tumblers as a new lifestyle choice for urban dwellers in Jakarta, which currently ranks 71st in the world according to the Global Cities Index (GCI) 2025.

The tumbler distribution event was held near iftar time at Bundaran Senayan Transit Hub, in front of Ratu Plaza in Central Jakarta, on Monday, 9 March. Several Pelita Jaya athletes, including Brandon Jawato, Russel Nyoo, and Reza Guntara, attended and distributed tumblers to residents.

“We want Jakarta residents to be able to carry tumblers everywhere they go. Here, we are collaborating with Pelita Jaya as an icon of young Jakarta to campaign the tumbler-carrying movement and become tumbler champions,” said PAM JAYA Chief Executive, Arief Nasrudin, in a written statement on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

Arief explained that Jakarta residents need to gradually reduce their consumption of bottled drinking water. This is particularly important given that Jakarta generates approximately 7,000-8,000 tonnes of waste per day, requiring serious efforts to reduce the volume of rubbish, including plastic bottles.

Therefore, according to him, carrying a tumbler is a simple step residents can take to help reduce plastic waste.

“By carrying a tumbler, residents can directly refill with free drinking water from PAM JAYA water purifiers available at several public transport points and public spaces. This is one of the concrete steps we are taking. Of course, we must be healthy, economical, and reduce plastic waste,” he said.

PAM JAYA noted that water purifiers installed at seven Transjakarta transit hubs have been widely utilised by residents. Between January 2025 and January 2026, over 600,000 litres of water have been consumed.

When converted, this figure is equivalent to saving approximately 1.3 million plastic bottles. This figure represents a tangible contribution to efforts to reduce plastic waste in Jakarta.

Currently, PAM JAYA has collaborated with Transjakarta to provide water purifiers at several hubs, including Bundaran Senayan Transit Hub and CSW Kebayoran Baru Transit Hub. Similar facilities are also available at several public spaces such as Fatahillah Mosque and Jakarta City Hall.

Additionally, Pelita Jaya athlete Brandon Jawato viewed the event very positively and was pleased to be directly involved in distributing tumblers to residents. In his view, the habit of carrying tumblers should be promoted to become part of the lifestyle of Jakarta residents, particularly young people.

“I myself always carry a tumbler when training or playing basketball matches. A tumbler has become an essential item that I must carry at all times. I also want young Jakarta residents to be able to carry tumblers everywhere,” explained Brandon.

Brandon added that the tumbler-carrying movement needs to be continuously campaigned so it can become part of societal culture.

“We as young people need to have strong environmental awareness. And this tumbler-carrying movement must become our culture. We must become tumbler warriors,” he concluded.

Going forward, the synergy between PAM JAYA and Pelita Jaya to present various positive initiatives for residents will continue.
