The Head of the Palu Search and Rescue Office (Basarnas) attended a coordination meeting on the handling of crocodiles in Palu Bay waters, held on Thursday, 17 April 2025.

The meeting took place at the Palu City Bappeda Office on Jl Balaikota, Tanamodindi Sub-district, Mantikulore District, Palu City. It was chaired by Palu City Secretary Irmayanti Pettalolo and attended by a number of relevant agencies, including local government representatives, the military and police (TNI/Polri), Basarnas, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), as well as environmental and safety organisations.

Head of the Palu Search and Rescue Office, Muh Rizal, emphasised the importance of strategic and coordinated measures to anticipate potential threats posed by the presence of crocodiles in Palu Bay waters.

One of the proposals put forward was the need for a comprehensive census of the crocodile population in the area. The census aims to obtain accurate data as a basis for formulating management policies.

In addition, he recommended the establishment of a Patrol Task Force (Satgas) tasked with monitoring public activity in coastal areas, particularly at weekends when visitor numbers tend to rise. The task force is expected to provide a sense of security and prevent unwanted incidents.

Rizal also urged the Palu City Government to designate safe zones for bathing and swimming activities at beaches. Establishing such locations would facilitate surveillance and serve as focal points for security operations, enabling the public to enjoy recreational activities with greater peace of mind.

The coordination meeting is hoped to mark a concrete first step in efforts to protect public safety whilst maintaining the ecological balance of the Palu Bay area.
