Palm Oil Downstream Processing Opens New Business Opportunities, Young Generation Encouraged to Develop Products
Efforts to drive the downstream processing of the palm oil industry are not solely reliant on large-scale investments in the manufacturing sector. There is also ample scope for innovation-based business development for the younger generation and MSMEs through the utilisation of various high-value-added palm oil derivative products.
This opportunity was a key focus of the Gen-Z Preneur MSME Palm Oil Workshop titled ‘Plantation and Oleofood Entrepreneurship Start-Up’, held in Karawang, West Java. The two-day event was organised by Sawit Indonesia Magazine with support from the Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDP).
The workshop was attended by students, university students, MSME players, and aspiring young entrepreneurs keen to understand the business potential of palm oil downstream processing. Besides discussing business opportunities, participants were also introduced to various product innovations successfully developed from this strategic commodity.
Founder of Palmtrienol Indonesia, Dr. Irdawati Novita, noted that most of the public still views palm oil merely as a raw material for cooking oil and margarine. In fact, the commodity contains nutritional content and bioactive compounds that can be utilised for various needs in the health and beauty industries.
‘Many people only know palm oil as cooking oil or margarine. Yet palm oil contains tocotrienols, vitamin A, omega-3, and omega-6, which can be used in various health and nutritional products,’ she said.
According to Irdawati, various palm-based products have been successfully developed, ranging from skincare products, hair growth tonics, ointments, to crayons made from palm oil. Currently, her team is continuing research to produce new innovations that can increase the added value of the national palm oil commodity.
She expressed hope that the younger generation can play a greater role in developing downstream products, so that Indonesia does not only become a producer of raw materials, but also a centre for palm-based product innovation.
