Palembang officially imposes a fine of IDR 500,000 for littering
Palembang (ANTARA) - The Palembang City Government, South Sumatra, has officially implemented administrative sanctions in the form of a maximum fine of IDR 500,000 and social sanctions for those caught littering, starting today, Friday (15/5).
The implementation of this strict regulation began with the socialization of the Mayor’s Regulation (Perwali) Number 17 of 2026 concerning Waste Management by the Mayor of Palembang, Ratu Dewa, together with the Regional Secretary, Aprizal Hasyim, in the Pelataran Kambang Iwak (KI) area of Palembang.
“Today is a form of our commitment. The implementation of sanctions against those who litter will begin today,” said Ratu Dewa in Palembang, Friday.
She emphasized that the financial fine targets violators who dispose of waste improperly, including residents who throw garbage into rivers or throw garbage from moving vehicles.
In addition to financial penalties, the Palembang City Government is also preparing social sanctions as a form of education and deterrence for offenders. Residents who violate the rules will be required to carry out community service to clean up the environment, public facilities, places of worship, and educational facilities.
To support the enforcement of these rules, the Palembang City Government, through the Environmental Service (DLH), has allocated at least 500 units of various types of waste bins to be distributed to the sub-district and village levels.
She asked all levels of government, from sub-district heads to village heads, to actively socialize this rule so that it is understood by all levels of society. However, she acknowledged that fulfilling this cleanliness infrastructure still requires support from the business world.
“We hope for support from stakeholders and business actors through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, so that the need for waste bins throughout sub-districts, villages, and neighborhoods can be met,” she said.
On the other hand, as a long-term solution to address the volume of waste in the “pempek” city, she explained that the Palembang City Government is currently finalizing the Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) project, which is targeted to begin operating and be inaugurated in October 2026.
