Pakistan, Bahrain Discuss Middle East Situation Following US-Iran Escalation
Karachi (ANTARA) - Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and his Bahraini counterpart Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani discussed the latest developments in the Middle East following the recent escalation between the US and Iran, which has further strained a fragile ceasefire. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said Dar and Al Zayani held a telephone conversation on Sunday regarding the latest Middle East developments after the signing of a framework agreement mediated by Pakistan between the US and Iran. The talks came after Iran’s latest attacks on several US military facilities located in Bahrain and Kuwait. Bahrain said on Sunday it had ‘successfully’ intercepted and destroyed a number of Iranian missile and drone attacks on its territory. A day earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had targeted US positions in the region in response to US strikes on Iran. Al Zayani also congratulated Pakistan on the signing of the US-Iran framework agreement, known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. He praised Islamabad’s ‘constructive’ role in facilitating the deal and expressed hope that it would contribute to lasting peace and stability in the region. In response, Dar thanked Al Zayani for his ‘warm sentiments’ and reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to promote dialogue and diplomacy to achieve peace and stability in the region and beyond. Pakistan has played a central role as a mediator between the US and Iran in ending the war that began on 28 February.
