JAKARTA — The presence of several padel courts in Jakarta has again sparked controversy.

Residents living near padel facilities have complained about the operational noise and disturbance to their comfort. Residents have also highlighted the operating hours of padel courts, which are said to continue late into the night, exceeding the time limits set by the Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov).

In a video posted by Instagram account @chintyaade, a padel court located near residential areas can be seen still operating until 23:39 WIB. The sound of ball bounces and players’ shouts were clearly audible from the surrounding residential areas.

In the video’s narration, it was mentioned that residents had attempted to mediate with the court management. However, these efforts were reportedly frequently ignored by management.

In response to the complaints, the court operator assured that additional soundproofing would be installed. The manager of The Padel Side, Soleh, stated that the padel court was already equipped with soundproofing. However, the currently installed soundproofing was not functioning optimally.

“So there will be no more noise, God willing we can get around 70 per cent sound reduction, at least 50 per cent as a minimum. So really the sound won’t reach the residents’ homes,” said Soleh when met.

Regarding operating hours, Soleh claimed that the management had adjusted to the direction of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government. He said that the district and village authorities had asked the operator to limit operations to 8 pm. In fact, said Soleh, if the court still operates beyond 10 pm, local residents will close access to the court using a gate.

“Just recently we had a visit from the district and village, saying the schedule must be changed to a maximum of 9 pm. By 8 pm it should already be closed, by 9 pm everyone should have left,” explained Soleh.

Residents on Jalan Limo, Senayan, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, have also complained about the presence of padel courts in their area.
