A resident of Haji Nawi, South Jakarta, has complained about noise from a padel court, prompting the facility’s operators to promise the installation of sound-dampening measures.

The resident, identified as Naufal (27), said his family had filed numerous complaints through the JAKI municipal application. “I filed one report in November, one in December, and from January to February I was filing three reports a week through JAKI. Because of the volume of reports we’d made, we managed to meet with the facility operators on 31 January, but the mediation yielded no results,” Naufal said when met at his home on Thursday (19/2/2026).

Naufal explained that the noise from the padel court had been ongoing since its construction and continued due to the sounds of play. He said the noise was frequently heard from morning until late at night.

“There’s shouting and especially the sound of the ball, from 6am until midnight. But it should be noted that the 6am to midnight timeframe was during the early period — January through early February. After that, they committed to stopping at 10pm, but on several occasions we found them still laughing and playing past 10pm,” he said.

Naufal said that in his immediate neighbourhood, three houses are occupied by his parents, siblings, and his 90-year-old grandmother. There is also a neighbour who has recently given birth.

“Everyone living here complains. You can’t focus on prayer, can’t focus getting ready — even bathing you can’t concentrate. Getting ready for the office, trying to gather energy for the next day’s work — none of it is possible. And the stress makes everyone short-tempered,” he added.

Naufal said his mother had experienced a spike in blood pressure, something that had only occurred recently. “My mother’s blood pressure shot up to 200 — that’s real, measurable. It’s not just a feeling; her blood pressure genuinely measured 200,” he said.

Governor Pramono Orders Oversight of Padel Court

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung ordered the facility to be placed under supervision and declared his readiness to take firm action.

“I have specifically instructed the relevant agencies to conduct field inspections regarding this padel matter,” Pramono told reporters at Semanggi Park, South Jakarta, on Friday (20/2).

He said a decision on the padel court’s fate would be made the following week, noting that the facility had neither secured community approval nor obtained complete permits.

“On Monday or Tuesday we will promptly decide on padel courts that disrupt public order, that have not obtained the approval of local residents and whose permits are incomplete. The DKI Jakarta government will take firm action,” he said.

Court Operators Respond

The facility’s operators spoke out following widespread criticism on social media about the noise, promising to install soundproofing.

A representative of PT Kreasi Arena Indonesia, Fourthwall, Fajar Ediputra, said operating hours during the fasting month would be reduced to 2pm to 7pm, down from the previous 6am to 10pm.

“We are limiting our operating hours during Ramadan by approximately 50 per cent. This is also intended to show greater respect for our neighbours,” Fajar told reporters on Thursday (19/2).

The operators also pledged to install sound-dampening materials to address the complaints, requesting time for the installation.

“We will reinforce our walls so that sounds generated from the padel court are contained inside and do not disturb the surroundings,” he explained.

House Commission X Chairman Weighs In

Hetifah Sjaifudian, chairwoman of House of Representatives Commission X, also responded to the issue. She said padel court operations everywhere must take into account neighbourhood comfort and public order.

“Sporting activities must still consider aspects of neighbourhood comfort and public order,” Hetifah said when contacted on Friday (20/2/2026).

Hetifah urged local governments to ensure that padel court operating permits comply with regulations. She called for requirements mandating the use of soundproofing so that activities at padel courts do not disturb residents.

“I urge local governments to ensure that every padel court construction complies with spatial planning rules and environmental impact assessments, including noise threshold standards,” she said.

“Where necessary, operators must install soundproofing and limit operating hours so as not to disturb nearby residents,” she added.
