Over 6.55 Million Users and Saudi QRIS as BSI's Strategy to Capture the Young Generation
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BSI) is aggressively targeting the younger generation through digital services and the hajj ecosystem. Amid changing lifestyles in society, Indonesia’s largest sharia bank sees that young people are not only active in digital transactions but are also beginning to prepare for hajj and gold investments from an early age.
By the first quarter of 2026, users of BSI’s BYOND application reached 6.55 million, with total transactions amounting to Rp 223 trillion. BSI President Director Anggoro Eko Cahyo stated that the productive age group is now a new source of growth for the company.
“Our next source of growth is the younger generation,” said Anggoro during the presentation of BSI’s Q1 2026 performance on Tuesday (12/5/2026).
According to him, this trend is evident from the increasing number of hajj savings and digital gold customers from the 21-40 age group. BSI recorded that the number of hajj savings accounts now stands at 7.25 million customers. Meanwhile, the number of digital gold savings users has exceeded one million customers.
Anggoro said that changes in societal behaviour have become apparent in recent years. Young people are now considered more aware of preparing for religious obligations and long-term investments.
To reach this segment, BSI continues to strengthen digital services through the BYOND application and the development of cross-border QRIS transactions.
BSI Sales and Distribution Director Anton Sukarna said that BSI’s QRIS service is currently usable in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, and China.
BSI is currently preparing the development of QRIS in Saudi Arabia to support transactions for Indonesian hajj and umrah pilgrims. “We are developing the use of QRIS in Saudi Arabia in line with our hajj and umrah service expansion strategy,” said Anton.
In addition, BSI is developing digital merchant services through the BYOND Merchant App, equipped with a soundbox feature or voice transaction notifications. Interestingly, the voice feature is prepared with various language options and regional dialects in Indonesia.
According to Anton, these steps are taken so that BSI’s digital services feel closer to communities in various regions.
BSI Finance and Strategy Director Ade Cahyo Nugroho said that digitalisation has been one of the keys to the company’s growth in recent years. He assessed that digital services make it easier for the public to access sharia products, from hajj savings to gold investments.
“Now people can buy gold starting from Rp 50,000 through the application,” said Ade.
BSI believes that the combination of digital services, hajj, and gold will become the company’s new strength to attract the younger generation to the sharia financial industry.
