Over 200 ticketed in S. Jakarta
JAKARTA (JP): A raid by the South Jakarta mayoralty netted 391 people on Thursday for violating various regulations, including littering, disrupting traffic and failing to produce their identification cards.
Only 208 of the 391 people were ticketed, with 184 being tried in a makeshift court in a tent on Jl. Sutan Agung in front of Pasar Rumput. The on-site trial was presided over by judge Bachtiar Lubis and prosecutor Tobiana Siahaan.
It was not clear if the 34 people discovered not carrying identification were in Jakarta illegally. In previous raids people with out Jakarta ID cards have been sent home to their villages.
Violators were fined between Rp 6,500 and Rp 17,500, depending on the severity of the infraction. A total of Rp 2,873,000 in fines was collected.
Meanwhile, in response to complaints that the raids disturb people's sleep because they are always carried out early in the morning, an official at the South Jakarta mayoralty said that its personnel may lack professionalism.
At least 20 students, mainly women, have protested the bad treatment -- bordering on harassment -- they underwent during a raid last March. (14)
