Over 2,600 Inmates in Bali Proposed to Receive Sentence Reductions for Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr
Thousands of inmates in prisons and detention centres across Bali have been proposed to receive sentence reductions ahead of the Hindu new year Hari Raya Nyepi 1948 Saka and Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah. A total of over 2,600 inmates have been put forward for sentence reductions on these two religious occasions.
Decky Nurmansyah, Head of the Bali Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas), stated that the remission proposals originate from all prisons and detention centres throughout Bali.
For the Nyepi celebration in 2026, the office has proposed over 1,000 inmates as remission recipients. “For this year’s Nyepi remission, we are proposing over 1,000 inmates across all prisons and detention centres in Bali,” Decky said on Monday (16 March 2026).
The remission proposals for Eid al-Fitr are considerably larger, with approximately 1,600 Bali inmates proposed to receive sentence reductions during the Islamic celebration.
“For Eid al-Fitr remission, we are proposing around 1,600 inmates,” he added.
However, Decky emphasised that these figures remain provisional and are not final. The designation of remission recipients is still awaiting an official decision letter (SK) from the central government. “We cannot yet provide exact figures as we are still awaiting the decision letter that will be issued. Once that arrives, we will certainly inform the public,” he stated.
Decky explained that holiday sentence reductions represent the state’s appreciation for inmates who have demonstrated good behaviour during their rehabilitation in prisons and detention centres. In some cases, remissions can directly result in immediate release if an inmate’s remaining sentence matches the amount of the sentence reduction granted.
“When the remission calculation aligns with their remaining sentence, the inmate in question can be released immediately,” Decky clarified.
However, he cautioned that remissions can be revoked if inmates commit violations in the lead-up to the remission distribution date. “Therefore, we continuously remind inmates to maintain good conduct and consistently participate in rehabilitation programmes until their remissions are officially issued,” he said.
He expressed hope that the timing of remissions during these religious holidays could serve as motivation for inmates to continue reforming themselves during their sentences and to participate actively in the rehabilitation process within the prison system.
