The controversy surrounding remarks made by Indonesia’s 10th and 12th Vice President, Jusuf Kalla (JK), in a sermon has escalated significantly. The Indonesian Christian Youth Movement (GAMKI), along with Catholic Youth, officially reported JK to the Metro Jaya Regional Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit on Sunday night, 12 April 2026.

The report was filed due to statements from the sermon, which have spread widely on social media and are deemed to have caused anxiety among the public. GAMKI General Chairman, Sahat Martin Philip Sinurat, stated that they visited Metro Jaya Police Headquarters representing approximately 19 Christian organisations and community groups. Prior to this, they held a meeting at GAMKI’s secretariat on Jalan Cirebon to address the controversy.

“We from the Indonesian Christian Youth Movement came earlier to report Mr Jusuf Kalla,” he said, as quoted on Monday, 13 April 2026.

According to Sahat, this legal step was taken to prevent the issue from spiralling further in the public domain, particularly on social media.

“Secondly, we also reported it to Metro Jaya Police so that these statements, which have caused uproar in society and on social media, can be directed towards resolution through legal means,” he added.

In agreement, Stefanus Asat Gusma, General Chairman of the Central Board of Catholic Youth, affirmed that the report was made because the circulating sermon content is considered disturbing.

“So we are reporting this tonight to ensure the situation is quickly brought under control and does not spread further. Our hope is that, as a national figure, Mr JK will respond to this appropriately, at the very least by issuing an open statement, apologising, and clarifying everything,” Gusma stated.

He also emphasised that Christian and Catholic teachings do not recognise violence, let alone acts of murder against fellow humans. Furthermore, he mentioned that they would coordinate with organisational structures across Indonesia to calm the situation. Meanwhile, Sahat viewed the reporting as a step to curb the escalation of uproar on social media.

“In fact, because we forgive, we do not want this to become a uproar on social media. As we have seen on social media, Mr Jusuf Kalla has been criticised and verbally attacked by many netizens. Therefore, we are placing this in the legal realm,” he added.
