Optimistic in Facing US Section 301 Investigation, Coordinating Ministry for the Economy: We Have the Data
Spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, Haryo Limanseto, stated that the Indonesian government is optimistic about facing the Section 301 investigation by the United States (US). The Section 301 investigation is a process conducted by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) as part of the review of trade policies and practices of partner countries, including Indonesia. There are two main issues being investigated by the USTR. First, allegations of practices that create or maintain excess capacity in the manufacturing sector (structural excess capacity). Second, the effectiveness of implementing bans on imports of goods produced with forced labour. “And we have data or information to support it. In addition, this has already been part of the discussions during the ART negotiations that have been agreed upon together,” said Haryo Limanseto in Jakarta in his press release on Thursday (26/3/2026). In facing this investigation process, Haryo emphasised that the government continues to strengthen readiness through cross-ministerial and institutional coordination as well as industry associations. This is done to ensure the alignment of data and information to be submitted in accordance with Indonesia’s position. The government has also consolidated and strengthened response materials as the basis for presenting arguments. “Currently, the cross-ministerial and institutional team as well as industry associations have coordinated and will prepare responses both through public hearing sessions (before 15 April 2026) and government-to-government consultations with the USTR. The date for the consultation session is being agreed upon together,” said Haryo. With strong data support, solid coordination across stakeholders, and constructive communication with the US side, the government is optimistic about navigating the investigation process well. Not only that, the government is also optimistic about continuing to safeguard national interests in the trade relations between the two countries.
