Optimise Protection: Learn How to Understand Your Insurance Policy and Its Exclusion Clauses
In the midst of rising medical service costs and health risk uncertainties, having health protection is one of the important steps in financial planning. Health insurance policies serve as a fortress providing financial protection against various treatment costs, from doctor consultations, medical examinations, to hospital inpatient care in accordance with the benefits listed in the policy. Prudential Indonesia’s management explained that by having health insurance, the public can be better prepared to face health risks that can occur at any time, while minimising the potential financial burden that may arise due to medical treatment needs. “For many people, health insurance is often seen as a saviour when facing medical emergencies. However, there is one important thing that is often overlooked by policyholders, namely thoroughly understanding the contents of the insurance policy they own,” said Prudential Indonesia’s management in its statement on Monday, 30 March 2026. An insurance policy is fundamentally a binding contract between the policyholder and the insurance company. It contains various provisions regulating the rights and obligations of both parties. These include coverage of protection benefits, costs, risks, product features, the amount of premiums to be paid along with the payment schedule, claim submission procedures, and certain conditions not included in the protection or known as exclusion clauses. By reading and understanding the terms and conditions written in the policy, policyholders can clearly know the protection benefits they have. This also helps ensure that when policyholders submit claims in the future, the process can run more smoothly because it complies with the provisions stated in the policy. “Every insurance policy has different provisions, depending on the type of product chosen. One important part that needs to be understood by policyholders is the exclusion clause, which is a list of certain conditions or situations not covered by the insurance company,” it stated. Some examples of conditions commonly included in exclusions in health insurance products include diagnoses of illnesses or conditions not included in the policy’s protection benefits; claims occurring during the waiting period or exclusion period for certain diseases; injuries or losses suffered by the insured due to involvement in legal violations, criminal acts, or criminal activities.
