OpenAI Officially Halts Sora Service, Shifts Focus to Robotics Research
OpenAI has surprisingly announced the cessation of operations for Sora, the video generator app that went viral and was touted as the future of digital creative content. This decision marks a major strategic shift for the company led by Sam Altman in its consumer products and social media strategy.
In an official statement on Tuesday (24/3/2026), OpenAI confirmed it will close the standalone app to prioritise resources on other more crucial projects.
“As our focus and ongoing increases in computational demand continue, the Sora research team will shift focus to world simulation research to advance the field of robotics, which will help humans accomplish physical tasks in the real world,” an OpenAI spokesperson said in a statement.
The company added that it must carefully consider products that require very high computational costs.
Sora, OpenAI’s first standalone app after ChatGPT, briefly topped the iPhone App Store charts shortly after its launch in September last year. However, its journey was not smooth. Copyright holders quickly voiced concerns over the use of intellectual property (IP) and facial similarities of people without permission on the platform.
In addition to copyright issues, critics highlighted the app’s role in spreading misinformation and low-quality content often dubbed “AI slop”.
This decision also directly impacts OpenAI’s strategic partnerships. In December last year, OpenAI reached an agreement with Disney allowing their iconic characters to appear in user-generated AI videos on Sora. However, related sources indicate this collaboration will not continue with the company’s change in direction.
“We respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video creation business and redirect their priorities elsewhere,” a Disney spokesperson told CNN. Disney added it will continue to explore other AI platforms to engage fans while respecting copyrights and creators’ rights.
This step by OpenAI aligns with a previous Wall Street Journal report stating the company is shifting efforts from fragmented consumer products to more business-client oriented products.
Currently, OpenAI faces stiff competition from Anthropic through its popular Claude Code product among programmers, as well as Google, which continues to show rapid progress in its video generator models.
For loyal Sora users, OpenAI stated it is “exploring ways to support export and preservation” of user-created content before the app is fully shut down. (CNN/Z-2)
