26-year-old resold illicit content online, earning more than S$13,000 from buyers

A Singaporean man who bought explicit material online and resold it through social media platforms has been sentenced to jail after authorities uncovered a large digital archive of obscene content.

Court Sentences Man Over Obscene Content Sales

Gregory Seow Rui Jie, 26, was sentenced to eight weeks in jail on March 4 after pleading guilty to selling obscene films online.

Authorities said Seow sold at least 1,149 obscene video files over a period of about six months, collecting a total of S$13,690 from buyers.

Discovery of Explicit Content Online

The court heard that Seow first encountered censored nude images on Tumblr around January 2023. The user who posted the images invited interested viewers to contact him through direct messages.

After sending a message, Seow was instructed to create an account on the file hosting service MEGA, where he received access to a folder containing explicit images of women.

Purchase of “SG Galore” Content Folder

Seow later asked to purchase more material and paid S$50 through a PayLah QR code. In return, he received access to a folder called “SG Galore” containing multiple subfolders filled with sexual videos and images.

He downloaded the files onto his laptop, phone and personal MEGA account before considering ways to resell the material for profit.

Reselling Content Through Social Media

In November 2023, Seow created several Tumblr accounts and began advertising the explicit content. He used hashtags such as “xmm”, “sgbabe” and “sggals” to attract potential buyers.

Interested users contacted him through Tumblr before continuing conversations on Telegram, where he sent a template message promoting access to the content folder.

Police Investigation and Evidence

Customers paid through PayLah QR codes and received MEGA links containing the videos and images. Initially charging S$50, Seow later increased the price to S$100 and eventually S$200.

Police investigations later revealed the folder contained 26,864 videos and 128,308 images totaling about 1.2 terabytes of data.

The case highlights Singapore’s strict stance on the distribution of obscene material and the growing role of digital platforms in cybercrime investigations. As online content sharing becomes more widespread, authorities continue to monitor illegal activities closely to protect public standards and enforce media regulations.
