One killed in N. Jakarta clash

JAKARTA (JP): A group of around 30 people, six of whom were armed with sharp weapons, killed a man and badly injured another in an apparently unmotivated attack in North Jakarta.

Mohamad Kadri, 22, suffered a fatal wound in his neck and was stabbed more than 10 other times elsewhere in his body.

Hidayat, who was stabbed in his left hand, said he and his four friends had no idea why they were attacked by the gang led by Engkos Kasmuri from a neighboring subdistrict.

He said that the five of them, all of whom are residents of Bendungan Melayu subdistrict in Koja, were on their way to a friend's house when the attackers stopped them in the Kebon Bawang neighborhood at around 4 p.m. Monday.

"Without a single explanation, the group suddenly attacked us," he told reporters at the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital where his friend's body was kept.

Hidayat's three other friends, all of whom are servicemen, were able to flee.

Hidayat is a crew member of a ship and Kadri a cleaner at the Tanjung Priok seaport.

"I've filed a report at the North Jakarta Police Precinct to sue Engkos and his accomplices," said Hidayat. (04)
