On Indonesia-US Trade Agreement, Airlangga Assures Indonesian Citizens' Personal Data is Safe
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has reassured the public that Indonesian citizens’ personal data will remain protected under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) between Indonesia and the United States.
Airlangga explained that in the digitalisation process, personal data is shared with digital platforms. Examples include creating email accounts, streaming service accounts, and e-commerce accounts.
“This digitalisation involves sharing personal data with digital platforms. Personal data sharing to Google creates Gmail accounts, Netflix accounts, and even if it’s non-American e-commerce, then with Alibaba and others, with Amazon,” said Airlangga at the Indonesia Economy Outlook event hosted by CNN Indonesia at Menara Bank Mega on Monday, 2 March 2026.
This means that the data being shared does not include population registration and civil data of Indonesian citizens.
“So there is no data from Dukcapil being given to the American government—that is not happening. What would be the point anyway, since America also does not need that,” Airlangga stated.
He reiterated that the data being shared comes only from digital platforms and is guaranteed by US legal protections that are equivalent to those in Indonesia.
“And they guarantee that if such data is shared, they have personal data protections equivalent to the laws that exist in Indonesia,” Airlangga concluded.
