On Hambali's extradition

I refer to Hambali's extradition tangled published in The Jakarta Post, on Aug. 23.

Shame on you Professor Hikmahanto Juwana. Your review of the political and socioeconomic complications preventing a successful extradition from U.S. custody to Indonesia of Hambali is well taken. However, this deliberately ignored Hambali's right to proper due process.

Hambali would receive fairer treatment in Indonesia, under Indonesian law, than he could ever receive from a U.S. military tribunal and CIA interrogators in Guantanamo Bay or Afghanistan. Hambali, an Indonesian citizen, has broken no U.S. laws, but he is accused of several serious offenses committed in Indonesia. He is almost certainly being held under a jurisdiction where he will receive nothing remotely similar to due process. Indonesian citizens, even alleged terrorists, still have legal and human rights.
