Istanbul (ANTARA) - Oman has confirmed the start of a new round of indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States in Geneva on Thursday.

The talks began concurrently with a meeting between Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi and Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi, the Foreign Ministry said via its social media platform X.

Al-Busaidi emphasised the importance of the IAEA’s “professional and technical” role and “the need to ensure transparency, credibility, and proper governance in relevant procedures”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led the Iranian diplomatic delegation in the talks. Members of the delegation included Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi, as well as a team of nuclear and legal experts.

The US side, as in previous rounds, was led by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

Tehran and Washington have held two rounds of indirect talks under Omani mediation since nuclear diplomacy resumed last month, following efforts by a number of regional countries to ease tensions.

Following the previous round in Geneva, which followed the first round in Muscat, both sides gave positive assessments and agreed on “guiding principles” which Iranian negotiators say could pave the way for a possible agreement.

The talks between Tehran and Washington are taking place amid a significant increase in US military presence in the Persian Gulf region, along with a series of recent military exercises conducted by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
