If violations of regulations are found during the special examination process, OJK will take compliance enforcement actions in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, including the imposition of administrative sanctions and other supervisory measures.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) will conduct a special examination of the peer-to-peer lending operator PT Indosaku Digital Teknologi (Indosaku), following allegations of misconduct by a debt collector (DC) who reported a fake fire or “prank” to the fire department in Semarang.

This step is a follow-up to OJK’s summons and meeting with the online lender (pindar) Indosaku and the Indonesian Joint Funding Fintech Association (AFPI) on Monday (27/4) to request explanations and clarifications from both parties.

Head of the OJK’s Department of Surveillance and Integrated Financial Services Sector Policy, Agus Firmansyah, stated in Jakarta on Tuesday that the authority will also impose sanctions if violations are proven in the debt collection process/mechanism.

Furthermore, OJK has requested AFPI along with its Ethics Committee to conduct an in-depth investigation and impose a blacklist sanction on the third-party debt collection service provider involved in the incident.

In addition, OJK has asked Indosaku to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of its debt collection processes, including an evaluation of cooperation with third-party debt collection companies, to ensure that all collection activities are carried out professionally, ethically, and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

OJK emphasises that all financial services business actors are responsible for the actions of third parties they appoint to carry out collections. Debt collection practices must be conducted professionally, ethically, and in accordance with applicable provisions.

OJK prohibits all forms of collection that are intimidatory, contain threats, are humiliating, degrade dignity, or other actions contrary to the law.

“OJK will continue to coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure that the case is handled firmly, transparently, and provides a deterrent effect,” said Agus.

Previously, on Thursday afternoon (23/4), a suspect believed to be a peer-to-peer lending debt collector submitted a fake fire report or “prank” to the Semarang City Fire Department (Damkar).

Head of Operations and Rescue at the Semarang City Damkar, Tantri Pradono, explained the chronology: the report came in via the Damkar call centre about a fire at the Mas Adi fried rice stall.

After investigation, the stall owner suspected the report was the work of a debt collector trying to pressure him.

“We confirmed with the stall owner. He said the report was made by a peer-to-peer lending debt collector to intimidate him over an online loan debt issue,” said Tantri.

According to him, the debt amount was not large, around Rp2 million, from an online loan since 2020.

On Saturday (25/4), the perpetrator finally visited the Semarang City Fire Department office to apologise directly.

Although the personal apology has been accepted, Semarang City Damkar Secretary Ade Bhakti stressed that the decision to withdraw or proceed with the report lies with the institution’s leadership.
