The government has established a work-from-home (WFH) policy for one day per week for civil servants (ASN). This policy will be implemented every Friday, both in central and regional agencies.

“The implementation of work from home for ASN in central and regional agencies will be carried out for one working day per week, namely every Friday,” said Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto during a virtual press conference on Tuesday (31/3/2026), as reported by detikNews.

Airlangga stated that the policy has been calculated based on experiences following the COVID-19 handling. This policy aims to encourage the adoption of digital-based work systems while improving efficiency.

“Why Friday? Because some ministries have already done that, working four days a week with applications, this post-COVID,” said Airlangga.

Airlangga also mentioned that the workload on Fridays is not as heavy as on other days. However, he emphasised that public services will continue to operate despite the implementation of WFH one day per week for ASN.

“We chose Friday because it’s half, meaning not full from Monday to Thursday. But public services will still run,” he said.

The government also requests that the one-day-per-week WFH policy does not disrupt performance. Each office is asked to design a system to ensure the policy runs normally.

“Productive activities, including banking and capital markets and others, will continue to operate, and offices are permitted to arrange with certain applications, and certain government applications are already running,” he said.

Several efficiency policies implemented by the government in response to the impacts of the war in the Middle East will take effect from 1 April. The government is also limiting the use of official vehicles for ASN by 50% and encouraging the use of public transport.

“Efficiency in mobility includes limiting official vehicles by 50% except for operations and electric vehicles. Encouraging the use of public transport. So reducing official vehicles and maximising public transport as much as possible,” said Airlangga.

The government is also implementing WFH for private sector employees. WFH for private sector employees will be adjusted to the characteristics and needs of each business sector.

“The implementation of work from home for the private sector will be further regulated in a Circular from the Minister of Manpower,” said Airlangga.

“While still considering the characteristics and needs of each business sector,” he added.

Previously, the one-day-per-week WFH policy is a government step in fuel efficiency due to the impacts of the war in the Middle East. Last week, Airlangga Hartarto stated that the decision had been set and would soon be announced to the public.

“It’s already set this week,” said Airlangga after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto in receiving US entrepreneur Ray Dalio at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Friday (27/3).

After a working meeting with Commission II of the DPR RI on Monday (30/3), Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said that after the official government announcement, the Home Affairs Ministry would provide guidance to regional governments. Tito did not detail the technical guidance to be given to regional heads.

“It will be announced tomorrow (today),” he said.

No Fuel Price Increase

Amid the turmoil of the war in the Middle East impacting global oil supplies, the government has also assured that there are no plans to raise fuel prices (BBM). State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said the decision was taken on direct instructions from President Prabowo Subianto.

“So we need to convey that after coordination, in this case the government and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources together with Pertamina and on instructions from Mr President, Mr President always prioritises the interests of the people and society in making decisions,” Prasetyo told reporters on Tuesday (31/3/2026).

“Therefore, Pertamina states that Pertamina will not adjust prices for either subsidised or non-subsidised BBM,” he continued.

Prasetyo urged the public not to be influenced by unverified rumours. He guaranteed the government’s commitment to maintaining price stability to protect people’s purchasing power.

He said BBM availability is also secure. He asked the public not to worry.

“No need to be anxious because BBM availability is guaranteed by us. We guarantee it. And there will be no price adjustment,” he said.
