Official attacks Sorong legislator

SORONG, Irian Jaya: A government official reportedly beat up Hasmi Moha, chairman of the local branch of the United Development Party (PPP), over the weekend for unknown reasons.

As reported by Antara the official, identified only as AH, punched Hasmi in the face as the politician was entering the office of the regency's chief of financial affairs.

"I have reported the incident to the PPP central executive board, which will lodge a complaint with the Minister of Home Affairs," Hasmi said.

Community leaders in Sorong have reportedly expressed their regrets over the incident. Some of them described AH as an official who is unable to take criticism. (mds)
