Nyepi 2026 in Bali: Ngurah Rai Airport Falls Silent
Ahead of the sacred Nyepi holiday in 2026, Ngurah Rai International Airport is observed to be quiet. “Ngurah Rai International Airport will pause momentarily from its duty of welcoming the world. Not out of fatigue, but to give space for the universe to breathe anew,” quoted from the official Instagram post of @Baliairport, as cited on Thursday (19/3/2026). In a short video uploaded, it shows the serene atmosphere at Ngurah Rai International Airport, with no activity in every corner of the airport area. Be it in the waiting rooms, runways, or departure areas. This operational closure is part of the airport’s commitment to supporting and respecting the observance of the sacred Nyepi holiday on the island of Bali. “In accordance with Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) number A0096 issued by Perum LPPNPI/AirNav Indonesia, all regular commercial flight activities at the airport will be halted starting from Thursday, 19 March 2026 at 06:00 WITA until Friday, 20 March 2026 at 06:00 WITA.” It was further stated that during this period, there will be no regular flights departing or arriving at Ngurah Rai International Airport. Furthermore, it was conveyed that this operational halt has been coordinated with all aviation stakeholders. Nugroho said that flight schedule adjustments have also been informed by each airline to passengers. “The temporary suspension of airport operations during Nyepi has been routinely carried out every year, so that the Hindu community on the island of Bali can solemnly perform the series of Catur Brata Penyepian rituals,” he stated. Although flight operations are halted, Nugroho continued, a number of airport personnel will remain on standby to support emergency flight operational needs. Such as medical flights or special flights if required, and have obtained approval from the relevant authorities.
