This Ramadan, Muslims around the world will once again mark the event of the revelation of the Qur’an, or Nuzulul Qur’an. Most Indonesian Muslims will observe Nuzulul Qur’an this week. Previously, the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs had declared the start of Ramadan on 19 February 2026, so the Nuzulul Qur’an commemoration will take place on Saturday, 7 March 2026, tomorrow. The commemorative night, meanwhile, can begin on Friday night, 6 March 2026. Nuzulul Qur’an refers to the event of the first revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through the angel Gabriel (Jibril) while he was engaged in worship and seclusion in the Cave of Hira, a quiet place near Mecca. The event occurred around the year 610 CE, when the Prophet Muhammad was 40 years old. The first revelation consisted of the initial five verses of Surah Al-Alaq. The revelation began with the word ‘Iqra’, meaning ‘read!’. The command to ‘read’ became a crucial symbol in Islam, that this faith is built on knowledge, reflection, and intellectual awareness. Since then, the Qur’anic revelation continued to descend gradually for about 23 years. One of the greatest miracles of the Qur’an is its beauty and linguistic power. At the time of its revelation, Arab society was renowned for a high literary tradition. They loved poetry and held poets in high esteem. Yet when the Qur’an was revealed, Arab linguists of the day could not match the beauty of its phrasing or the depth of its meaning.
