Number of Holiday Travellers Using Public Transport Rises 9.23 Percent

The Ministry of Transportation recorded a surge in holiday travellers using public transport during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming flow. This year, the number of mass transport passengers reached 10,003,583 people from H-8 to H-1 of Eid.

“This figure is up 9.23 percent compared to the same period during Eid 2025, which recorded 9,158,315 passengers,” said the Head of the Bureau of Communication and Public Information of the Ministry of Transportation, Ernita Titis Dewi, quoted from a written statement on Monday, 23 March 2026.

Based on data from the Integrated Eid Transport Central Post, Titis said that rail transport contributed the largest number with a total of 2,981,945 passengers, or an increase of 13.22 percent compared to last year.

In second place was ferry transport with 2,482,303 passengers. This number increased by 14.78 percent compared to last year.

Meanwhile, air transport recorded 2,190,282 passengers, up slightly by 3.05 percent. Land transport reached 1,587,060 passengers, an increase of 9.18 percent, and sea transport recorded 761,993 passengers.

In addition to passenger movements, Titis said that private vehicle traffic also increased at several points. On H-1 of Eid, vehicles exiting toll gates in Jakarta numbered 117,016 units, while those entering reached 66,210 units.

“Overall, traffic at Jabodetabek toll gates reached 248,349 vehicles, while outside Jabodetabek it was recorded at 236,758 vehicles,” she said.

She added that on H-1 of Eid or 20 March 2026, the number of public transport passengers departing reached 915,635 people. Rail services recorded 302,823 passengers, consisting of intercity and regional trips. Air transport served 207,261 passengers, both domestic and international.

Meanwhile, ferry transport served 189,804 passengers, land transport 161,054 passengers, and sea transport 54,693 passengers.

The Ministry of Transportation also recorded relatively high on-time performance (OTP) for several modes. Intercity trains recorded 98.20 percent OTP and regional trains 98.90 percent. Domestic air transport reached 85.79 percent, while international was 70.24 percent.

“For sea transport, the on-time rate reached 95.70 percent, ferry transport was recorded at 63.19 percent, and land transport at 72.49 percent,” said Titis.
