Makassar (ANTARA) - The Makassar Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded that the number of displaced people continues to increase due to heavy rain in the city of Makassar.

Based on the latest data from the Makassar BPBD Rapid Response Team, the number of displaced people in Makassar has increased to 878 people from 239 families spread across 15 evacuation points.

“The evacuation points are spread across several places such as mosques, schools, and community health centers,” said the Head of the Makassar City BPBD, Fadli Tahir in Makassar, Thursday.

Since the extreme weather occurred, the Makassar BPBD has deployed all of its rapid response team personnel to affected areas to ensure the safety of residents.

“We also continue to monitor water levels through the EWS and AWLR systems,” he said.

The BPBD is also coordinating with sub-district, village, and related agencies to ensure that the response is carried out quickly and appropriately. Evacuation equipment, including inflatable boats and safety equipment, is also on standby in case of an increase in water levels.

So far, Fadli said, the situation is generally safe and under control, but people are still advised to be vigilant and avoid routes with high water levels.

Moreover, the Class IV Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BBMKG) of the Makassar region has also released the potential for high rainfall in the South Sulawesi region, which is forecast to last from February 24 to March 1, 2026.

Therefore, policymakers and the people of South Sulawesi are expected to increase preparedness for the potential occurrence of hydrometeorological disasters.

The Makassar City Government has reaffirmed its commitment to continue to be present and move quickly in every disaster situation in order to protect the community.
