NU National Conference: Government Must Ensure Citizens' Personal Data Is Protected
The 2026 National Conference (Munas) of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Religious Scholars has urged the government to ban other countries from freely accessing citizens’ personal data and to ensure the personal data of Indonesian citizens is protected. This became a recommendation of the Bahtsul Masail Maudhuiyah Commission at the 2026 NU National Conference, held at the Al Falah Islamic Boarding School in Ploso Village, Mojo District, Kediri Regency, East Java. “The government, as the owner of the national data centre, bears a great responsibility to safeguard that data so it does not leak to other parties,” said Commission Member KH Aniq Nawawi during a plenary session at the Al Falah Islamic Boarding School in Kediri on Monday (22/6/2026). Gus Aniq, as he is familiarly known, stated that personal data is included among private secrets that must receive protection for their owners. “Other parties permitted to access that data also have a responsibility to guard it so it is not disseminated,” he said. Gus Aniq added that Article 4 of Law Number 27 of 2022 concerning Personal Data Protection explains that personal data consists of specific data and general data.
