NTT opens internet connection service in RI

JAKARTA (JP): PT NTT Indonesia, a subsidiary of Japanese telecoms giant NTT Communications Corp., launched a US$12 million internet connection and data services center here on Thursday to help local companies move towards the Internet.

NTT Indonesia is a joint venture between NTT Communications and Indonesia's Lyman Group, with each company owning 65 percent and 35 percent respectively.

NTT Indonesia's president Taizo Nakano said the company targeted at least 100 companies as customers in its first rollout of the center and hoped that more would follow.

The data center, located at Wisma 46 on Jl. Jend. Sudirman, Central Jakarta, provides Internet services designed to expand businesses in the global marketplace, he said in a media conference preceding the official launch of the center.

NTT's senior executive Satoshi Fujita said that it sees a promising future in Indonesia's information, telecommunications, and technology sectors despite the political turmoil currently engulfing the country.

"Indonesia is an important country for our global expansion ... we are optimistic of its prospects," he said.

NTT Communications is also the holding company of Japan's cellular giant NTTDoCoMo, famous for being the first in the world to rollout a third-generation handphone.(tnt)
