Indonesia’s Lebaran 2026 will undoubtedly see massive population movement across the nation. Although the number of homebound travellers is predicted to decline slightly, the National Police (Polri) have already identified the most critical time windows.

Outbound and return traffic will split into two waves. The first peak of outbound travel is estimated to occur on 14–15 March 2026, followed by a second wave on 18–19 March 2026. This period coincides with the Nyepi (Balinese New Year) holiday, which may affect traffic congestion in several regions.

“This activity overlaps with the Nyepi holiday. The peak return journey is also predicted on 25–26 March for the first wave and 28–29 March for the second wave in 2026,” said Deputy National Police Chief Commissioner General Dedi Prasetyo on Monday, 2 March 2026.

According to a Ministry of Transport survey, the total potential population movement during Idul Fitri 1447 Hijriah is projected at 143.9 million people, representing a decline compared to the previous year.

“Compared to 2025, when the Ministry of Transport survey recorded 146.4 million people, we still need to anticipate potential increases in actual movement,” he explained.

The decline of 2.57 million people, or 1.75 per cent, has not prompted authorities to ease security measures. Past experience demonstrates that actual field conditions often exceed predictions.

To manage this massive mobility, Operation Ketupat 2026 will run for 13 days with 161,243 personnel from various agencies. Security efforts extend beyond toll roads and arterial routes to cover 185,608 critical facilities.

Mosques, Eid prayer locations, shopping centres, terminals, railway stations, ports, airports, and tourist attractions are all priority protection targets.

A total of 2,746 posts have been established, comprising 1,624 security posts, 779 service posts, and 343 integrated posts. Vehicle custody services at police stations will also be available for those travelling home for Eid.

“We will implement various traffic management measures on toll routes, including odd–even number plates, one-way systems, contraflow, delaying systems, and buffer zones at ports,” Dedi stated.

During an inter-ministerial and inter-agency coordination meeting, the government has confirmed the availability of essential goods and adequate fuel supplies throughout the Lebaran holiday period.
