Not Just from Russia, Indonesia Still Needs Oil and LPG from the US
The government is striving to secure sources of crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to maintain national energy resilience. Indonesia has already obtained a supply commitment for crude oil and LPG from Russia. Specifically for oil, Indonesia will import 150 million barrels from the country led by Vladimir Putin. Nevertheless, this supply is not enough, and Indonesia will continue to secure energy supplies from the United States (US). Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung stated that Indonesia has long imported crude oil and LPG from the US, but the volume will be increased in line with a new agreement to purchase energy from that country. Indonesia is committed to buying energy commodities from the US worth US$15 billion, which is part of the trade agreement or Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) between the US and Indonesia. “We already have imports from America, both crude and LPG. So we are trying to increase them to fulfil our commitment in the ART,” said Yuliot at the Ministry of ESDM in Jakarta on Friday (24/4/2026). He gave an example that Indonesia’s total LPG imports reach around 7 million tonnes, with about 60% coming from the US. The government is endeavouring to increase that share as part of the trade cooperation commitment. Furthermore, Yuliot said that currently, a team from Pertamina (Persero) is in the US to explore companies capable of supplying Indonesia’s energy needs quickly, while also discussing delivery schemes. “We also have a commitment with America. So this morning I also met with the Foreign Ministry and some ambassadors, that was also regarding that commitment. The Pertamina team is currently in America,” he revealed. “So which companies can supply us quickly and how the delivery. We hope that various sources for our crude needs, and also for domestic LPG needs, can be met,” added Yuliot.
