North Sumatra is reportedly the region with the most extreme legal sanctions for drug crime offenders in Indonesia. Throughout 2026, the number of death sentences for drug offenders in this region is the highest compared to other provinces.

Assistant Attorney General for General Criminal Affairs (Aspidum) of the North Sumatra Prosecutor’s Office, Jurist, revealed that this firmness is a non-compromising commitment to eradicating drug trafficking.

“In early 2026 alone, 24 suspects have been sentenced to death, while throughout 2025, over a hundred people were recorded. Our goal is for these drug kingpins to be eliminated. If you ask for my opinion, I say they should be executed,” he stated in Medan, Wednesday (25/2).

In line with the firmness in the courtroom, the North Sumatra Police are also intensifying operations in the field. Throughout the period from January to February 22, 2026, the police have uncovered 923 cases, arresting 1,118 suspects.

The evidence seized includes 179.95 kilograms of methamphetamine, 155.40 kilograms of dried marijuana, and 59,168 ecstasy pills. Furthermore, 24.74 kilograms of ketamine powder, as well as hundreds of vape devices containing narcotics and liquid ketamine, were seized.

Director of Narcotics Investigation at the North Sumatra Police, Kombes Andy Arisandi, stated that the seizure of hundreds of kilograms of narcotics has a massive social impact on the community.

“From the total evidence seized, we estimate that 1,480,551 people have been saved from the potential for drug abuse,” he said.

The North Sumatra Police ensures that the eradication efforts will continue to be intensified through strategies of strengthening intelligence and cross-sectoral collaboration. Although there are challenges in the legal process, law enforcement officials in North Sumatra are claimed to remain steadfast in their position to suppress drug trafficking through maximum penalties.
