North Sumatra Governor: Central Tapanuli Residents Building Temporary Shelters Independently
Medan (ANTARA) - North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution has stated that a number of Central Tapanuli (Tapteng) residents are building temporary shelters independently on their own housing plots.
In addition to observing conditions first-hand, Bobby also engaged in dialogue with homeowners whose properties were severely damaged by flash floods, offering them encouragement.
"We will utilise available funds to help build permanent housing for residents whose homes have suffered severe damage," Bobby said in Sorkam Subdistrict, Central Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, on Thursday.
The governor noted that his team, accompanied by Central Tapanuli Deputy Regent Mahmud Efendi Lubis and an entourage, had first inspected the condition of a dam damaged by the disaster.
The dam has become a key focus for the government, given its vital role in irrigating the community's rice paddies.
"From there, we proceeded directly to inspect the homes of residents affected by the flash floods here in Sorkam," Bobby said.
During the visit, Bobby also chose to hold his first iftar of the holy month of Ramadan 2026 together with the community at a resident's temporary shelter.
Dozens of Central Tapanuli residents appeared enthusiastic in welcoming the North Sumatra Governor and his entourage. The gathering was followed by congregational Maghrib prayers.
"The government has prepared a budget for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of community housing. So for residents whose homes are severely damaged, the assistance is Rp60 million [for independent rebuilding]," Bobby explained.
"I am here to ensure that residents can obtain their entitlements. Especially during this month of Ramadan, they must still be able to worship comfortably," Bobby said before dining together with residents at the site.
The series of activities by North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution in Sorkam, Central Tapanuli, concluded with congregational Isha and Tarawih prayers at the Al-Azhar Mosque in Sorkam Kiri.
Before leaving the mosque, Bobby took time to greet worshippers and distribute snack parcels to children.
"We very much wanted to visit all disaster-affected locations in Central Tapanuli. However, this is only our first visit here. I hope that residents can remain patient and strong in facing this calamity," he concluded.
