North Sumatra Deputy Governor Surya has informed the House of Representatives' Commission VIII that the provincial government continues to accelerate post-disaster recovery efforts in the province.

"We are currently entering the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase following the floods and landslides of late November 2025," said Deputy Governor Surya after receiving a working visit from Commission VIII at the North Sumatra Governor's Office on Friday.

The Deputy Governor explained that affected communities have been placed in temporary shelters whilst awaiting the completion of permanent housing being constructed by the government.

Meanwhile, the regional administration is focused on preparing livelihood recovery programmes for disaster-affected residents, with repairs to critical infrastructure continuing apace.

Data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) indicates that temporary housing across two regencies in North Sumatra is partially complete. In Tapanuli Utara, 40 units are being built in Sibalanga Village, of which 30 have been completed, with the remainder targeted for completion by the end of February 2026.

In Tapanuli Selatan, temporary housing construction has reached 683 units across several villages, whilst 133 units of self-built temporary housing are still under construction.

"Affected communities have moved into temporary shelters. We are designing livelihood revitalisation programmes and restoring critical infrastructure," said Deputy Governor Surya.

The Deputy Governor also expressed appreciation for the support of both the central government and the House of Representatives in post-disaster recovery across three Sumatran provinces — West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh.

He noted that cross-sector collaboration is key to accelerating post-disaster recovery, particularly in North Sumatra.

"Our current focus is on strengthening technology-based mitigation systems and community education so that long-term disaster risks can be reduced," said Deputy Governor Surya.

Deputy Chairman of Commission VIII Ansori Siregar stated that the working visit aimed to channel regional aspirations and conduct budget oversight.

He affirmed that the House of Representatives continues to push for budget policies that prioritise public welfare, especially in disaster-affected areas.

"This is a joint commitment between the central and regional governments to maintain intensive communication, ensure social assistance reaches its intended recipients, and strengthen the social resilience of North Sumatra's communities in an inclusive manner," Ansori emphasised.
