Non-Subsidised Diesel Prices Rise, Here's the Fate of Used Diesel Cars
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Used car dealers at WTC Mangga Dua report that sales of diesel Toyota Fortuner and Innova Reborn, as well as Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, remain normal despite the recent rise in non-subsidised diesel fuel prices. Several dealers note that second-hand Fortuner and Pajero models continue to attract interest, especially in areas with difficult access that require vehicles capable of navigating such roads. One of them, Tono, states that the Pajero is the most sought-after in the diesel vehicle segment due to its good durability. “Compared to the Fortuner and Pajero, the Pajero is still the most in demand because it has a larger tank capacity than the Fortuner and is more fuel-efficient,” said Tono. Nevertheless, both vehicles can indeed handle muddy roads, such as those in mining areas or challenging terrains. “Perhaps in Jakarta, only a few areas are suitable for the Fortuner and Pajero, but in the regions, especially outside Java, and in mining areas, they are even more useful,” he continued. He gave an example in Papua, where many taxis in the area use Fortuner and Pajero due to their high ground clearance of up to 218 mm, making them suitable for challenging terrain. “In Papua, many taxis use Fortuner and Pajero, especially in mining areas; they definitely use those two vehicles,” he said. Moreover, both are Japanese cars whose fuel detection technology can still be circumvented. “Actually, the Pajero and Fortuner can use biodiesel because their technology can be adjusted. It’s different from something like the Hyundai Palisade, as South Korean technology is quite sensitive,” he explained. Meanwhile, Julian attributes the continued popularity of the Fortuner and Pajero to their ability to navigate all kinds of roads, whether flat or steep. “As we know, the Fortuner and Pajero can travel on all roads, whether muddy or ordinary, so there are still buyers looking for them,” said Julian. Additionally, their affordable prices for used models also contribute to normal sales. “Yes, still around Rp400 million to Rp500 million; for the middle to upper class who don’t want the hassle of navigating roads, they will definitely choose those two vehicles,” he clarified. On the other hand, the availability of spare parts for the Fortuner and Pajero is relatively easy compared to other diesel cars besides Toyota and Mitsubishi. “Spare parts are why many people still seek out the Fortuner and Pajero; as we know, Toyota and Mitsubishi have readily available parts, which might be the reason these two vehicles are still popular despite the rising non-subsidised diesel prices,” he added.
