Nokia officially launches the Nokia G42 5G, the first 5G smartphone that users can repair themselves
Nokia, via HMD Global, has officially unveiled the Nokia G42 5G, a mid-range 5G smartphone designed so that users can repair it themselves. The phone represents a key milestone in the collaboration between Nokia and iFixit, the platform known for electronics repair guides. Through this collaboration, users can easily replace damaged smartphone components without visiting a service center.
The flagship feature of the Nokia G42 5G is QuickFix repairability technology. This enables users to replace a range of important components, such as a cracked screen, a battery whose performance has deteriorated, or a damaged charging port, all by themselves.
Nokia and iFixit also provide official spare parts at affordable prices and complete repair guides to make the repair process easier and more practical for users.
In Europe, the Nokia G42 5G is priced at 199 pounds. The phone comes in the distinctive color option “So Purple” and will be marketed via Nokia’s official online store from 29 June for the UK and some other countries. The company has yet to reveal launch plans for India or other Asian markets.
In terms of design, the G42 5G adopts an environmentally friendly concept with the back panel made from 65 percent recycled material. The device features a 6.56-inch HD+ display (720 x 1612) with a 90Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling.
For protection, it includes Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to improve resistance to scratches and minor impacts.
In performance, the Nokia G42 5G is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480+ octa-core chipset, paired with 6GB of RAM and support for up to 5GB of virtual RAM. It has 128GB of internal storage, expandable up to 1TB via microSD.
The smartphone runs Android 13 and Nokia promises OS updates for two years.
On the photography front, the G42 5G features a triple rear camera setup with a 50MP main sensor, 2MP depth sensor, and 2MP macro lens. For selfies, there is an 8MP front camera with Night Mode.
The device carries an IP52 rating, making it resistant to dust and splashes. To support daily activities, it is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery and 20W wired fast charging.
With the Nokia G42 5G, the company reiterates its commitment to delivering user-friendly devices that are also environmentally sustainable. The self-repair capability is seen as a solution to reduce electronic waste and extend device lifespan. With a combination of repair-friendly features, competitive specifications, and relatively affordable pricing, the Nokia G42 5G could be a compelling option in the mid-range smartphone market.
