Noel admits wrongdoing and expresses regret in K3 corruption case plea
Former Deputy Labour Minister Immanuel Ebenezer, known as Noel, admitted fault and expressed deep regret during his personal plea hearing at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday (25 May). Noel stated he had failed to uphold his public office responsibilities in the alleged corruption and extortion case concerning the issuance of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) certificates. βIn front of Your Honour, I wish to begin with the simplest, most direct, and most honest words. I was wrong, I admit my mistake, I regret it,β Noel said while reading his plea in court. Noel emphasised that his defence did not address legal technicalities but was a personal reflection on his life journey and public service. He admitted to being less cautious in his duties, which negatively impacted his family and those who trusted him. During the hearing, Noel recounted his difficult upbringing, including earning money for school by collecting plastic mineral water cups and washing cars after losing his father at age two. He attributed his pro-worker policies, such as banning the withholding of diplomas and removing discriminatory job requirements, to these life experiences. The Prosecution previously sought a five-year prison sentence for Noel, arguing he violated Article 12(b) in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Eradication Law and Article 12B of the Corruption Law regarding gratification within the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker). Despite acknowledging moral wrongdoing, Noel stated he respects the legal process and leaves the final decision to the panel of judges.
