No tax on education
No tax on education
From Media Indonesia
Personally, I share the view of Gajah Mada University rector
Sofian Effendy that there is no use in changing the status of an
institute of higher learning into a state-owned legal entity if
no benefit can be enjoyed by students and teaching staff.
As a layman in tax matters, I think every taxpayer is obliged
to meet their tax obligations, but the government, in this case
the Directorate General of Taxation, should rightly determine the
party subject to this obligation.
Subsidies for education are very low in comparison to those
received by other sectors, so that tax on education for whatever
reason should be abolished. Many other fields are still open to
taxation, while the most important thing is the transparent
utilization of tax receipts.
So, the main point is to exempt education from taxation and
give priority to the promotion of all branches of education,
because this is one way of achieving advancement and welfare in
society. Yet there is a reminder: College leadership and
management should avoid imposing too high tuition fees and
related charges.
