Nias to host world surfing
JAKARTA (JP): Brazilian surfer Pui Pereira, world ranked 44th,
is participating in the US$44,000 world championships in Sorake
beach in Nias, North Sumatra.
The event started yesterday and will end on Saturday.
Sixty seven surfers, 55 of whom are foreigners, will
participate in the championships, which has been acknowledged by
the International Surfing Association.
Dahlan Nasution, chairman of the organizer, said as quoted by
Antara that Americans Todd Holland and Corry Lopez, Vetea David
of Tahiti, South African Paul Canning, Australians Michael Lowe
and Beau Emerton and Japanese Takayuki Fukuchi will participate
in the championships.
Nias is considered one of the best surfing places in the
world, along with Hawaii, Australia and South Africa. (yan)
