New Zealand Updates National Fuel Strategy

Wellington (ANTARA) - New Zealand has updated its national fuel plan to address supply uncertainties caused by conflicts in the Middle East.

New Zealand Finance Minister Nicola Willis stated during a press conference on Friday (27/3) that there is currently “no need to impose fuel restrictions”, but the government is taking early steps to ensure the country is prepared to respond to the situation.

The plan outlines four escalating response phases covering petrol, diesel, and jet fuel, tailored proportionally to risks to New Zealand’s fuel supply resilience. The country is currently in Phase 1.

Phase 1 focuses on monitoring global developments and relaxing restrictions, such as fuel specifications, to enhance supply flexibility. Phase 2 strengthens coordination between government and industry to increase supply and reduce demand, according to the plan.

The plan allows for stronger interventions in Phases 3 and 4, including prioritising fuel supplies for emergency services and essential industries if disruptions worsen. These provisions are still under consultation.

Decisions to move between phases will be guided by six assessment criteria, including export restrictions from source refineries, changes in national fuel stock levels, or significant distribution disruptions, authorities said.

New Zealand Deputy Energy Minister Shane Jones, responsible for fuel supply resilience, stated during the press conference that the plan was developed through close collaboration with industry stakeholders.

“New Zealand has sufficient fuel stocks, but we are planning for various potential scenarios where securing future supplies could become increasingly difficult,” Jones said.
