JAKARTA - In one respect, a new building stands with fresh blue-and-white paint. However, on the other side, a pile of rubbish about two metres high emits a pungent smell. In Cakung Timur, East Jakarta, this irony is clearly visible. The Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi (SPPG) currently under preparation is situated right next to an overflowing rubbish heap that spills onto the road. “What kind of MBG is this near the rubbish, man, it stinks. SPPG right next to rubbish,” said a passing motorist. According to the Chairman of RT 001 RW 003 Cakung Timur, Anton Hermawan, the location was originally a community rubbish collection point. However, people from outside the area began dumping waste there, causing it to pile up. “That spot belongs to the RW, patrolled by the RW. But because it’s dumped haphazardly, people think it’s an illegal dumping site,” Anton explained. He also noted that the rubbish has accumulated further due to issues with transportation to the TPST Bantargebang. Several parts are still being renovated, such as the floor and roof, which will be replaced. “Later, the warehouse will be renovated, including the upper part that still uses corrugated iron, and the corrugated iron roof will also be replaced,” said one of the workers at the site. Residents stated that the building was previously an empty warehouse now rented for the SPPG. However, the untidy environmental conditions have cast doubt on the operational plans.
