New Sports Council chief to unveil assistants soon

JAKARTA (JP): The newly elected president of the National Sports Council Wismoyo Arismunandar will announce his leadership board lineup by Feb. 22, before fully taking office.

Nazaruddin Majid, Wismoyo's closest assistant during his tenure as chairman of the Indonesian Judo Association (PJSI), told reporters yesterday that Wismoyo looked certain to give Hendropriyono and Rudolf Warouw top jobs at KONI.

"The lineup will be completed on Feb. 21, a day before it is officially announced," Majid said.

Hendropriyono, a former Jakarta military commander, who now heads the National Army's Education and Training Command in Bandung, West Java, is likely to be named the KONI official in charge of athletes's training and development in place of Sutardiono.

Warouw, a retired one-star general who capped his military career in East Timor, is likely to take Kahpi Surjadiredja's secretary-general post.

Majid declined to discuss other possible personnel for the rest of KONI's top staff posts for the 1994-1998 term. Many have suggested Wismoyo that carry out a "regreening" program, saying that KONI needs fresh blood to keep up with the new challenges Indonesia is facing now.

Majid also refused to confirm whether Wismoyo would appoint an executive chairman. "It is his prerogative and right," Majid said. New Pelti chairman Sarwono Kusumaatmadja sparked a debate over the function of the post, saying that an executive chairman was a person who holds authority without equal responsibilities.

Wismoyo will officially report to President Soeharto after the completion of his staff.

Hendropriyono, the incumbent chairman of PJSI, and Warouw held key positions in PJSI under Wismoyo's leadership. Wismoyo stood at PJSI's helm for 12 years before handing the post over to Hendropriyono in December last year.

Wismoyo won a unanimous vote to succeed outgoing president Surono during a national congress here last month. The congress gave Wismoyo a month to fulfill the council's leadership board.

Wismoyo formally relinquished his Army chief of staff post to Gen. Hartono last Saturday. Wismoyo left that post because he reached 55, the mandatory age of retirement, last Friday.

The new KONI president initiated the idea of restructuring the sports body to conform with the standards of the Indonesian Army during his first meeting with the Jakarta Sports Journalists Association early this month.

The army is divided into 10 regional military commands. Under the restructuring, KONI would also have 10 regional offices, which would be responsible to the respective chiefs of the 10 military commands. (amd)
