New Samsung Patent Reveals Rollable Smartphone That Expands Without Folding

Samsung has not yet finished experimenting with more flexible smartphone display designs. Following the success of its foldable Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip lines, the company has now patented a new rollable and sliding screen smartphone design. The latest patent, first identified by WearView and xleaks7, reveals two distinct concepts of flexible screens that can expand when needed.

The first concept resembles a standard smartphone at first glance, with a design similar to the regular Galaxy S26 and three camera modules akin to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. However, the render shows a more elongated body. Instead of folding like the Galaxy Z Fold, the screen extends from the body via a sliding or rolling mechanism. The camera cutout moves with the hidden screen.

The second concept is even more unique. In its normal state, the flexible screen is fully concealed within the device body, making it look unlike a typical smartphone. Only when both sides are pulled outward simultaneously does the screen expand to increase the display area. The South Korean giant states that this approach helps protect the flexible panel from scratches or impacts when not in use. In both patents, the rear camera modules are positioned on the moving body part alongside the sliding screen. This design allows for a thinner device as the cameras are not placed on top of the rollable display. Samsung is said to incorporate specialised sensors to detect how far the screen extends and the speed of movement, enabling users to adjust the sliding motion more precisely.
