New PHEV MPVs Set to Duel: BYD M6 DM Takes On Wuling Darion
Jakarta — The competition in Indonesia’s electrified family-car segment is heating up after BYD officially unveiled the BYD M6 DM, the company’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) for the domestic market. The arrival of this model directly takes on the Wuling Darion PHEV, which had already drawn attention in the electrified MPV segment. Interestingly, both models adopt plug-in hybrid technology, but with distinct characteristics. The BYD M6 DM emphasises efficiency and the feel of driving an electric car, while the Wuling Darion PHEV prioritises practicality and the comfort typical of a large family MPV.
The BYD M6 DM comes in a more compact size, measuring 4,710 mm long, 1,810 mm wide, 1,690 mm high, wheelbase 2,800 mm, and a ground clearance of around 170 mm. The larger dimensions suggest the Darion may offer a more spacious cabin, especially for passengers in the second and third rows. The boxy body design with electric sliding doors also adds practical value for cabin entry and exit.
The BYD M6 DM, being more compact, is expected to be more nimble in urban use, including parking and negotiating narrow roads.
On the technology side, the BYD M6 DM uses the latest generation Dual Mode (DM) system with an electric-first approach. In many conditions, the electric motor serves as the primary drive, while the petrol engine acts as a power booster and as a battery charger.
BYD also claims the M6 DM’s fuel consumption can reach around 65 kilometres per litre, with a combined range of more than 1,600 kilometres when the battery and tank are full.
The Wuling Darion PHEV also offers quite attractive efficiency for a large family MPV. The car is claimed to achieve fuel consumption of up to 30.3 kilometres per litre. For the BYD M6 DM, this is claimed to be up to an average of 65 km per litre.
For daily electric-powered use, the Darion PHEV slightly leads with an EV mode range of up to around 125 km. The BYD M6 DM sits at around 105 km.
Regarding price, the Wuling Darion PHEV is marketed in Indonesia in the range of Rp 449 million to Rp 499 million, depending on variant and region. In some dealer networks, the price of the top variant is said to approach Rp 500 million.
Meanwhile, BYD has yet to announce the official price for the M6 DM for the Indonesian market. However, BYD says the price of this model will be made competitive to compete in the electrified MPV segment.
The appearance of two plug-in hybrid MPVs marks the start of a more flexible electrified market in Indonesia. Consumers are no longer offered only pure electric vehicles, but also PHEV options that offer fuel efficiency without sacrificing daily usability.
