New envoy to encourage more Japanese investment in Indonesia
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Japan`s Ambassador to Indonesia Kojiro Shiojiri said he would encourage more businessmen from his country to invest in Indonesia.
"More than 1,000 Japanese companies are operating in Indonesia and we hope the number will increase further in the years to come," Shiojiri said at a press conference here on Wednesday.
Introducing himself as the new Japanese ambassador to Indonesia to replace Shin Ebihara, Shiojiri said he was delighted to be posted in Indonesia at a time when the two countries were observing the 50th year of their diplomatic relations and to begin implementing their Economic Partnership Cooperation (EPA) agreement in July.
He said through the EPA, the two countries would step up their relations and mutually-beneficial economic cooperation.
"Based on the EPA agreement, I would like to develop economic relations between Indonesia and Japan," said Shiojiri who presented his credentials to President Susilo Bambang Yudhohono on Tuesday.
The EPA among other things provides for investment and trade liberalization, investment and trade facilities, and increasing the competitive capacity of Indonesian industries.
Japan is Indonesia`s main export destination with the value of its exports recorded at US$21.7 billion in 2006 while the value of Japan`s exports to Indonesia in the same year stood at US$5.5 billion. (*)
