New Arrivals Decrease, Residents Leaving Jakarta Increase
JAKARTA - The number of new arrivals to Jakarta has decreased compared to residents moving out after Eid al-Fitr 2026. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Civil Registry and Population Administration Office (Dukcapil) recorded that the number of residents leaving the capital has increased and is almost twice that of those entering. “The flow of new arrivals to Jakarta post-Eid 2026 has been recorded as decreasing. Conversely, the number of residents leaving the capital has increased and is even nearly twice as many as those entering,” stated the Head of DKI Jakarta Dukcapil, Denny Wahyu Haryanto, in his official statement on Tuesday (5/5/2026). This number is in line with predictions from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government. From 2021 to 2023, the number of arrivals post-Eid was recorded above 20,000 people. That figure then decreased in 2024 and 2025 to around 16,000 people. “This data is in accordance with the predictions as conveyed by the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung,” he said. On the other hand, the number of residents moving out of Jakarta reached 22,617 people in the same period. This number is almost twice that of the new arrivals entering. According to Denny, one factor influencing this situation is the programme for organising and regulating population documents in accordance with actual residences. He explained that many residents who have been living in buffer areas such as Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi still use Jakarta’s electronic ID cards. “Through this programme, they are adjusting their population administration to match their actual residences,” he clarified. In addition to administrative factors, the high cost of living in Jakarta is also a reason why residents choose to move to satellite cities.
