The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has released the 2025 Regional Competitiveness Index (IDSD), which serves as a basis for regions to improve their respective competitiveness. BRIN believes that the IDSD contributes to the national competitiveness index.

It is known that the IDSD is measured using indicators, with most of the data obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS). These indicators are used to measure four components of competitiveness: the supporting environment, human resources, the market, and the innovation ecosystem. This can serve as a guide for regional leaders to understand the position and direction of regional development.

The Head of BRIN, Arif Satria, stated that BRIN continues to measure the competitiveness index at the regional level, which then becomes one of the guiding principles for improving regional competitiveness. Through the IDSD score, regional governments can see their level of competitiveness as a basis for improving policies and efforts to promote sustainable development.

“Therefore, the index is once again not just about improving the score, but we hope that this index can have an impact on the changes and transformations carried out by regional leaders, especially in various fields, particularly in the economic field,” Arif said in a statement on Tuesday (24 February 2026).

Therefore, Arif affirmed that BRIN has a role to play in further strengthening regional innovation together with the Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA) and the Regional Planning, Research, and Innovation Agency (Bapperida), which are now present in many regions. This will enable these regions to become even stronger in providing added value and creating a research and innovation ecosystem.

“The growth of research and innovation will become a strength for Indonesia in the future, because Indonesia is expected to be among the top four countries in the world by 2050. There is no other way than to strengthen human capital and innovation,” he explained.

Furthermore, Arif hopes that with the release of this index, regions will be even more enthusiastic about continuously improving their index through various policy measures and development programs.

“BRIN, through BRIDA, will certainly be ready to strengthen the regional research and innovation ecosystem. Of course, we will also rely on various universities so that the existing innovations and technologies can strengthen the regional economy,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of National Development Planning (PPN)/Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Rachmat Pambudy, appreciated BRIN for updating the regional competitiveness index. According to him, this is important because it reflects the national competitiveness index as an initial step towards Golden Indonesia 2045.

“I also hope that the Head of BRIN ensures that this index will also reflect the welfare of the community in the regions. So, it is not just an index, because an index is a number, but it also reflects the welfare of the community,” said Rachmat.

On the other hand, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Bima Arya Sugiarto, said that the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) will continue to coordinate with BRIN in providing technical assistance related to innovation in the regions.

“This innovation is not just a competition, but it must be integrated from planning, budgeting, to evaluation. Of course, it will require co-creation and the involvement of many parties,” he said.
