National Police Prepare Contraflow and One-Way Systems to Manage Mudik Traffic Surge
The National Police are preparing traffic engineering scenarios including contraflow and one-way systems to manage the anticipated surge in homebound traffic following iftar (breaking of the fast). The Head of the National Police Traffic Management Unit (Korlantas Polri), Agus Suryonugroho, announced this measure as part of the security arrangements for Operation Ketupat 2026.
“We are expecting a possible surge in traffic flow after iftar, however our preparation of traffic management engineering scenarios is already complete. Whether in the afternoon or evening, we will implement contraflow and possibly one-way systems, which we have already prepared,” said Agus during a press briefing at the Korlantas Polri Command Centre in Cikampek, West Java, on Sunday (15 March 2026).
He explained that traffic engineering measures would be implemented based on measured parameters. One of the main indicators comes from vehicle monitoring radar at kilometre 47, which tracks vehicle volume every hour.
If vehicle volume reaches a certain figure consecutively, officers will propose the implementation of contraflow to leadership for immediate enforcement on toll road sections experiencing increased traffic flow.
“If for one consecutive hour the volume reaches 5,500 vehicles, we will automatically report to the Police Chief and implement single-lane contraflow traffic engineering. Secondly, if the volume in the following hour rises consecutively to 6,400 vehicles, we will implement two-lane contraflow,” said Agus.
