National Police Headquarters Evaluates Use of Firearms Following Polri Shooting of Teenager in Makassar
Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, head of public relations at the Indonesian National Police (Polri), said the police are carrying out evaluations, including on the use of firearms by officers. This follows the shooting of an 18-year-old in Makassar, South Sulawesi, by Panakkukang Police Sector’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Kanit Reskrim) Iptu N. “The evaluation process, you know, is ongoing. Every step in operational activities and police development involves something called analysis and evaluation, whether before, during the planning process, analysing and evaluating previous programme activities, during implementation, through to post-event,” Trunoyudo said at the Bareskrim building of Polri, South Jakarta, on Thursday (5 March 2026). In the process, he added, there are supervisory functions at various levels to ensure the evaluation runs. Accordingly, it is hoped that there will be no more shooting incidents by Polri personnel in the future. Earlier, Makassar City Police Chief Kombes Arya Perdana emphasised that Iptu N will be processed for shooting Bertrand Eka Prasetyo (18), even though the act was unintentional. The shooting occurred when Iptu N attempted to disperse a group of youths playing toy gun rifles. “The action we took was to immediately secure Iptu N, carry out an examination on the day itself and secure the weapon,” Arya said. The shooting occurred on Jalan Toddopuli Raya, Rappocini District, Makassar, on Sunday (1 March 2026) at around 07:00 WITA. Arya explained that at that time the Rappocini police chief reported a group of youths playing toy rifles that were disturbing road users.
