National Police Commission Expresses Regret Over Komar's Re-arrest Shortly After Prison Release in Bandung
Jakarta — A commissioner from the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), Choirul Anam, has expressed regret over the law enforcement action against Muhammad Ainun Komarullah, known as Komar, who was re-arrested by police immediately after his release from detention.
Komar had previously completed a six-month prison sentence handed down by the Bandung District Court in connection with a case under the Information and Electronic Transactions Law (ITE Law).
Anam argued that law enforcement is not merely a matter of whether criminal elements are satisfied, but must also examine the broader construction of events.
“We regret the step taken (of arresting Komar after his release). Therefore, it must be reconsidered that law enforcement is not simply about satisfying elements but should reflect the sense of justice in society,” Anam told Kompas.com on Friday, 13 March 2026.
If the incidents remain part of the same chain of events, according to him, a person should not be subjected to legal proceedings twice.
“For the broader construction of events, is it one continuous chain or not? Well, if it is one chain, then a person cannot be punished or subjected to legal proceedings twice,” he explained.
Anam further stated that law enforcement must also reflect the sense of justice in society and provide benefit to the management of social life. He added that law enforcement officials should also consider aspects of discretion and benefit in every legal process undertaken.
Komar, aged 24, was re-arrested by investigators from the Surabaya Metropolitan Police Resort immediately after leaving the Kebon Waru Detention Centre on Monday, 9 March 2026. Previously, he had completed a six-month prison sentence following the Bandung District Court’s verdict related to an ITE Law case.
However, upon his release, Komar was immediately picked up by investigators to face separate legal proceedings in Surabaya connected to posts on the Instagram account @blackbloczone regarding a call for action that resulted in disorder in front of the Grahadi Building in August 2025.
The case has now progressed to the stage of transferring the suspect and evidence to the Tanjung Perak State Prosecutor’s Office, and Komar has been formally detained by prosecutors since 10 March 2026.
